Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs)

Certain ocean measurements are so powerful for understanding ocean and weather forecasts, climate change, and broader ocean health, they have been deemed essential ocean variables, or EOVs.

The Essentials of Ocean Observing

CIOOS Pacific endorses the characterisation and standardisation of Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs), as defined by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)CIOOS contributes to these global efforts to better understand our changing oceans by enabling multisectoral Canadian EOV monitoring efforts to be readily findable within a single integrated hub. All CIOOS datasets further include essential ancillary spatiotemporal data and metadata, including time, latitude, longitude, and depth.

CIOOS Pacific currently provides full support for seven EOVs, with plans to expand this list over time. While CIOOS Pacific has made every effort to create an easy-to-use system for data contributors, in some instances data sets may contain variables which are more specialized, and therefore only partially supported at this time. These variables cannot be searched or filtered via the Data Catalogue or the Asset Map. However, data sets containing partially supported variables are discoverable by searching “organization” or a fully-supported variable contained within the same data set. All data sets within CIOOS are accessible and may be downloaded.
